The Lost Respect in the Rise of AI Music

As I spend more time in the world of AI-generated music, I’m starting to see a deeper divide forming, not just between traditional musicians and AI creators, but between generations of music lovers, and what they value.

Musicians from the old school often get labeled as “haters” of AI music. But I don’t see hate, I see fear. And not unjustified fear, either. This technology has the potential to change everything they’ve known. If you spent your life learning an instrument, writing lyrics, hustling for gigs, and building a career note by note, it must be incredibly confronting to see a track pop out of a machine in 30 seconds.

But I get it. The world changes. And like it or not, this is happening. AI music is here to stay. I personally think it’s exciting, a new frontier. But with that excitement comes a responsibility that’s already being ignored by many.

The thing that really worries me is the lack of respect I see from some in the AI music scene, especially the younger crowd. There’s a growing sense of superiority, or at least indifference, from those who think that because they can type a few prompts into a tool and generate something with a decent beat, they’re on the same level as the artists who paved the road they’re now casually cruising down.

Let’s get real for a second.
The genres you’re prompting into existence? Somebody created those.
The vibes, the rhythms, the sounds, they were born from decades of trial, error, rebellion, heartache, and expression.
They weren’t just clicked into existence. They were earned.

And now? It feels like music is becoming throwaway. Disposable. A vibe for a moment, not a story for a lifetime. The culture that surrounded music, the rockstar grind, the local scenes, the passion, the people, is being diluted by convenience.

I’m not saying AI musicians aren’t creative. Some are very creative and talented and put a lot of heart and soul in to their creates, but the majority are disposable 5-minute. tunes.
I’m not saying you can’t make amazing things with these tools. But what I am saying is this

We owe respect to those who came before.
Without them, we wouldn’t even know what the music we can so easily generate with these new tools is even supposed to sound like in the first place and neither would the AI tool we use. They deserve our respect.

So let’s build something new — yes.
Let’s push boundaries — absolutely.
But let’s not forget who laid the foundation.
Let’s not become so obsessed with the future that we erase the past.

AI music isn’t the enemy. Arrogance is.
